Rosehill center may get reprieve

MUKILTEO — The iconic and controversial Rosehill Community Center could be spared under a proposal to be discussed at today’s Mukilteo City Council meeting.

The City Council voted in March to tear down Rosehill and replace the former school with a new community center. Site layout plans at the time showed the new community center being built just south of Rosehill on the same property.

In early March, City Councilman Tony Tinsley proposed moving the site of the new community center to the east side of the property, which could allow room for Rosehill to remain standing.

The idea is scheduled to be discussed at today’s 7 p.m. City Council meeting at Mukilteo City Hall at 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

Representatives from ARC Architects of Seattle — the firm designing the new community center — are planning to be on hand to discuss the idea with the council.

In last week’s council meeting, council members Kevin Stoltz, Randy Lord and Richard Emery said they believed the proposal was worth further discussion.

Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine disagrees. He doesn’t believe the site of the new community center should be moved. Also, he said, the city might end up spending millions of dollars extra to refurbish Rosehill if it’s left standing.

“There is a whole set of things that (ARC Architects) looked at, where it made sense there,” Marine said. “I think the end result will be right back where ARC said we’d be in the first place.”
