Mountlake Terrace names girls basketball coach

Mountlake Terrace High School has turned to a familiar face to head up its girls basketball program.

David Brophy, a social studies teacher at the school, was named head girls basketball coach on May 21.

Brophy has spent the past five years as a throwing coach for the Lake Stevens track and field team. He previously served as the head track coach at Mountlake Terrace. Brophy also was an assistant for the Terrace boys and girls basketball teams, and for the football team.

Brophy’s experience is one of his biggest assets.

“I have experience in the building,” he said. “I’ve been a head coach before.”

Brophy is excited about the athletes he will be coaching and he emphasized that point when he interviewed for the position.

“I’m selective with my time,” said Brophy, who will be getting married this summer. “I want to be around quality people when I’m doing something.”

Brophy said his coaching style is best described as outside the box. Pressing and trapping are his top priorities on defense. That should help set up the offense.

“I do not want to have to set up an offense,” he added. “I want us to be going fast, which also means we’re going to play more kids.”

Increasing turnout is another priority.

But a lot of Brophy’s plans will be dictated by his personnel.

“I’m really not going to know what I’m going to do until I see the girls play,” he said. “I’ll be flexible. I want to take advantage of the other team’s weaknesses and try to use our advantages as much as possible. I don’t like asking kids to do what they’re not comfortable with.”

Mountlake Terrace has advanced to the district playoffs for six straight years.
