Save a Buck: Messaging Web site
Published 9:54 pm Saturday, August 2, 2008
Speak to me: Here’s a fun little Web site called Jott.com, as in jot down a note. It lets you use your cell phone to send an e-mail or text message reminder. It’s easy, and it’s free.
After you sign up you can call 866-JOTT-123 from your cell phone and speak a short message to be delivered to someone’s e-mail or as text message, such as, “Me: Dentist 9 a.m.” Or “Bob: Plane late, turn back.”
You can also set up groups to receive messages, regular reminders to yourself, and also links to news, weather and other Web sites. Of course, there are multiple ways to speed up and smooth out the process by using hot keys and speed dial. It’s much like Twitter, and you can link to Twitter and use that, too.
A couple of drawbacks we found: The 866 number was busy for long periods and the first Jotts we sent sometimes ended up in spam folders on e-mail until the Jottees found them and marked them as “safe.” But what do you want for free?
Go to www.jott.com to sign up.
