KENT, Wash. — It was dark, the race was going deep into the night, but the spectators in the stands weren’t budging from their seats.

A track cleanup minutes before curfew added unwanted stress. But the fans wanted to see the finals — a classic Ford vs. Chevy showdown — so Pacific Raceways officials allowed the final matchup to go past curfew.

Marysville’s Dave Carman of Ford Drag Team took his 10-second Mach 1 Mustang to victory over Ed Hauter of Pacific N.W. Camaro Club on Friday, Aug. 23.

Getting to the finals, it was Hauter of Lynnwood, driving his 1967 big block Camaro to victory over Kent Magruder of Snohomish, in his GT-350 Mustang, and Carman defeating Don Berry in his 1964 Chevy II Nova in the semis.

Carman and Berry’s race was the highlight of the semifinals.

Berry, of Monroe in his 10 second Nova, known as the Lil Deuce Coupe, and Carman’s 10-second Mustang brought cheers from the spectators as each car launched hard off the starting line and thundered down the track, with the Mustang sweaking out the win.

It was clear that the Ford Drag Team was going to have its hands full, when cars

from the N.W. F-body club and a huge number of cars from the Pacific N.W. Carmaro club pulled into the staging lanes.

The General Motors drivers were determined that there was not going to be a repeat of an all-Ford finals as was the case in the Aug, 8 race. They backed it up when Ed Hauter’s Camaro made it into the finals.

The Car Club Challenge Association. (www.carclubchallenge.com) has one race

left for the 2008 season, on Sept. 13 at Bremerton Raceway. In addition to the final points race, there will be a racer’s barbeque.

In its 10th season, the CCCA was created by drag racers with the idea of getting drag racing off the streets and on the track.
