Knee surgery to end Clement’s season

The pain in Jeff Clement’s left knee never got better and, tonight, an exam showed why.
The Mariners’ catcher has two tears in the meniscus and he’ll undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday. The recovery time usually is three to four weeks.
Mariners medical director Dr. Edward Khalfayan said Clement didn’t suffer a specific injury, but the tears probably were the result of normal wear and tear on the knee.
Clement finishes the season with a .227 average, five home runs and 23 RBI in 66 games. In August, he batted .325 with 12 RBI in 77 at-bats. The knee problem had limited him to DH and pinch hitting duty for most of the past two weeks.
