Evergreen Speedway results for Saturday, Sept. 6

Published 12:02 am Sunday, September 7, 2008

Right off the bat I need to make a correction and an apology … in my live blog from Evergreen Speedway on Saturday night (See below) I kept referring to the Mini-Stock feature winner as “Sean Reed” when in fact the winner was Steve Green.

Sorry about that Mr. Green.

All of the results — unofficial at present — from the racing on Saturday are below.

I tried to live blog from the Speedway to see (a) if it worked and (2) whether it would be a good thing to try for the upcoming championship races.

You can read the live blog elsewhere on Trackside (click on the link at left) — so it did work — but I’m not sure it will be a good thiing for the upcoming races. I’m a touch typist, but even so, I spent way too much time looking down and not at the track. And I don’t think I was really doing readers a favor … looking back over the entries it’s hard to get a feel for the races.

But, I may look at doing a modified live blog … say give the winners out or maybe update the top-5 every 10 laps. That way I could watch the race and still provide those not in attendance some sense of what’s going on. I’ll have to think about it this week.

Your input would be welcome.

One of the first things you learn in sports writing is to lead the story with the most important thing that happened. It may be an obscure play early in the game, but if it ended up influencing the outcome, the writer needs to remember it.

If I was writing a story about tonight’s racing, the lead item would have to be defending Mini-Stock champion Chuck Richard losing his right rear wheel while exiting turn 2 during the feature race. Somehow he kept the roof pointed up, but it was quite a wild ride.

And it probably cost him the chance to repeat as division winner. Richard’s good friend, and a former champion himself, Mark Weedin, held a slim lead going into the night. Weedin’s heat and feature race results Saturday night may have been enough to secure the championship.

Of course, we’ll have to watch the Short Track Championship on Sept. 27 to be sure.

Blackwood’s ride for sale: Former Bomber division champion Travis Blackwood’s car had a “for sale” sign on it Saturday night.

Blackwood said he is thinking about moving up to the Super Stock division next year, but would need to sell his Bomber first.

After years of competing in the Bomber division, racing in the late-model division would test his abilities more, Blackwood said. “Racing Johhny (Zaretzke), Kelly (Mann) and Naima (Lang) — that’s a challenge,” he added.

Another Bristol races: Making his second Bomber division start on Saturday night was 19-year-old Zach Bristol, the younger brother of Bomber driver Nikki Bristol.

Zach Bristol is from Snohomish and works at Green Flag Racing in Monroe. He served as his sister’s crew chief for a couple years and plans on running for the rookie title in the Bomber division next season.

Saturday Sept. 6, at Monroe, Wash.
