Candidates forum scheduled for early October

A candidates forum is planned for Oct. 6 in Edmonds.

The forum, presented by the Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, is 7 p.m. at the Edmonds City Council Chambers, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

A meet-and-greet time is planned for 6 p.m. Candidates for state legislative seats in the 1st, 21st, 32nd, and 44th districts have been invited to meet the public, answer questions and discuss policy.

Everett

Small oil spill at Naval Station Everett

Navy officials said that up to six gallons of oily water spilled Monday from the USS Ingraham.

The spill occurred about 10:45 a.m., Deputy Public Affairs Officer Sean Hughes said in a prepared statement.

The oily water was spilled in an area contained by floating booms at the pier at Naval Station Everett.

The Navy worked with the state Department of Ecology to ensure the incident was handled properly, Hughes said.

The Ingraham, a heavily armed frigate, is based in Everett.

Lynnwood

Police again offering Citizens Academy

The city of Lynnwood Police Department is planning its 19th annual Citizens Academy in early 2009.

The academy is a 16-week course for people to learn common police procedures, activities and investigative techniques.

Classes take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays beginning Jan. 9 at the Civic Justice Center, 19321 44th Ave W.

Activities will include investigating a mock homicide scene; lifting and examining fingerprints; a field trip to the gun range; experiencing a jailhouse dinner, and a tour of the cells.

There is no charge for the class, and refreshments are served each evening.

Lynnwood hosting police dog seminar

The Lynnwood Police Department is hosting the 2008 State Police Canine Association Fall Seminar.

More than 100 police dogs and their handlers from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia are set to be in Lynnwood through Wednesday.

Attendees can also contribute to the retired police dog fund.

Mill Creek

City arts advisory board has an opening

The city is seeking applicants for an opening on its Art-Beautification Advisory Board.

The volunteer board advises the City Council on topics such as special events and projects; use of the municipal art fund, and selection, acquisition and placement of artwork for the city.

The term expires in 2011. Board members must live in the Mill Creek city limits. The deadline to apply is Oct. 2.

Snohomish

Event celebrates new development

The Snohomish Chamber of Commerce is set to have its first Community Day at Snohomish Station, a new shopping center along Bickford Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 27.

The event aims to allow community groups to set up their displays, promote their activities and seek volunteers. Those who want to participate need to fill out an application form and send it to the chamber of commerce.

Sultan

$12,000 grant helps graffiti removal

A state agency recently approved a $12,000 grant for Sultan, Gold Bar and Index to help those cities remove graffiti.

The grant will pay for cleaning equipment including a wall washer, an airless sprayer, safety vests and face shields. The grant comes from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs.

City holds hearing on its blueprint

The Sultan City Council is set to hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the city’s comprehensive plan at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25 in the council chambers, 319 Main St.

The comprehensive plan sets guidelines for the city’s future developments.
