Ebenezer Lutheran Church offers an all-you-can-eat Norwegian pancake breakfast to benefit Gary Cease and his family from 7:30 to 11 a.m. today at 2111 117th Ave. NE, Lake Stevens.

Cease, 51 recently was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. For 30 years, Cease has been a coach and referee to Lake Stevens-area children.

A $5 donation at the event is suggested. Donations can also be made by check, payable to Norwegian Pancake Breakfast and mailed to Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 2111 117th Ave. NE, Lake Stevens, WA 98258.

Friends and family of Bruce Karr of The Farm Ministries plan to host a fundraiser Friday at the Snohomish High School football game at 1316 Fifth St., Snohomish, to raise funds for Karr’s cancer treatment. He is a 2008 Snohomish County Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year.

Organizers plan to have a table set up at the game to accept donations and to sell Entertainment Books, with 50 percent of the money going to Karr’s medical fund.

Flyers and boxes have also been placed at several Snoho­mish businesses, including Bickford Motors, McDaniel’s Do-It Center, Alfy’s, Top Foods, Tom Walker’s Haircuts Plus, Kelso Meats and The Hub Restaurant.

Celebrations

Temple Beth Or, a Reform Jewish congregation, invites the public to celebrate High Holy Days.

Celebrations begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 with Erev Rosh Hashanah services led by Rabbi William Cutter with soloist Jeffrey Prince. A 10 a.m. Rosh Hashanah morning service is set for Sept. 30, followed by a 1 p.m. dairy lunch and a 2:30 p.m. children’s service. Services are at 3215 Lombard Ave., Everett.

A Tashlich service is scheduled at 3:45 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Everett Public Boat Launch at W. Marine View Drive at 10th Street.

Yom Kippur is Oct. 8 and 9.

CLASSES

St. Cecilia Catholic Church offers Children’s Faith Formation classes for Catholic children in preschool ages 4 through fifth grade from 4 to 5:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday through May 6 at 26900 78th Ave. NW, Stanwood.

The program is designed for children eligible for First Communion and includes Sacramental Preparation classes. The parish also offers children’s Catechumenate for older children preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation or First Communion.

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is scheduled to start at the 9 and 11 a.m. Mass in October. This age-appropriate explanation of the Gospel is designed for children ages 4 to 7, with older children assisting. The children are dismissed from the Mass during the Liturgy of the Word and return after the homily.

Sister Maribeth Carson, pastoral assistant for faith formation, presents Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays. The weekly sessions explore the Catholic faith, answering such questions as: “What do Catholics believe and why?”, “How do I become a Catholic?” and “If I was baptized in another religion, do I have to be rebaptized?”

Snohomish Community Church presents The Marriage Course from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 4 at 13622 Dubuque Road, Snohomish. The course is scheduled for seven consecutive Saturdays, through Nov. 15.

The evening includes a candlelight dinner, teaching to strengthen marriages and time for individual couples to do practical exercises. The cost is $45 per couple.

The Kadampa Meditation Center wraps up Guarding the Mind, a meditation class from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Anabel’s Framing and Gallery, 2531 Broadway, Everett.

The guided meditations and discussions provide tools on how to remain positive and peaceful in any situation.

Bethel Baptist Church presents Biker Sunday, Gettin’ Movin’ for God from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at 2625 Hoyt Ave., Everett. Two blocks on Hoyt will be off-limits during the event, which includes a ministry fair and performances by the band Midnight Cry and the Tenino Drill Team.

Organizers plan to serve hot dogs and potluck food. There will be Harley-Davidson motorcycles to sit on and bikes on parade, drawings, a clown and balloons.

A bake sale and fundraiser to help orphans is also planned. Individuals can sponsor an orphan for $25.

A Gathering Grove presents the Everett-based band Jewbilee from 6 to 8 tonight at 2820 Oakes Ave., Suite C, Everett.

Jewbilee plays traditional Jewish music in a nontraditional way. They call their music Jewgrass — music played as jazz, swing, rock, Latino and occasionally as traditional Israeli music. The group consists of Jewish and non-Jewish musicians.
