Detours planned for work on State Avenue

Drivers should expect longer traffic delays at State Avenue and 136th Street NE from today through Oct. 10.

Crews are scheduled to do utility-related work at the intersection as part of the widening of State Avenue from 136th N. to 152nd.

Drivers are encouraged to choose alternate routes if possible, such as I-5 to the west. The alternative to the east, 51st Avenue NE (Shoultes Road) also has detour routes in effect south of Shoultes Elementary School for an ongoing Snohomish County road project.

Businesses in the corridor are expected to remain accessible, but traffic backups should be expected, due to round-the-clock alternating of one-way traffic during intersection work. Signs are posted notifying drivers of changes.

The State Avenue project is expected to be finished in August 2009.

Dickerman and Lake 22 trailheads to close

The parking lots at two popular trailheads are set to be closed during construction in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest.

The Mount Dickerman Trailhead parking is closed beginning today through April. Construction there will increase the parking lot from 20 spaces to 70 to add parking for the Perry Creek Trail, forest service spokeswoman Renee Bodine said.

A connector trail is scheduled to be built from the Perry Creek Trail to the Dickerman Trailhead. When that is finished, the Perry Creek Road will be closed, Bodine said.

The Mount Dickerman Trailhead is on the Mountain Loop Highway at milepost 27.3, east of Granite Falls.

In addition, the Lake 22 Trailhead parking area is scheduled to close on about Oct. 13 through the end of the year. The parking lot will expand from 30 to 48 spaces and gain new toilets and signs, Bodine said.

Some parking is available across the highway in the nearby Hemple Creek Picnic area.

The Lake 22 Trailhead is on the Mountain Loop Highway at milepost 13.2, east of Granite Falls.
