PREP ROUNDUP

MUKILTEO — The first conference game jitters were apparent for Meadowdale, but vanished as soon as the second half started.
Leading 28-25 at halftime, the Mavericks made it rain in the second half with unheralded offensive intensity, outscoring Kamiak 44 to 23 in the second half, and defeated Kamiak 72-48 in the first conference game of the season.
“The third quarter was the key,” Meadowdale head coach Chad McGuire said. “Our key was to keep them out of the paint and force them to shoot contested jumpers.”
“They came out in the second half and handed it to us,” Kamiak head coach Cory West said. “They handed the ball inside and got some nice play from their big guys.”
Meadowdale deployed a balanced attack with eight different players scoring over five points, including Roger O’Neill’s 19 points and Connor Hamlett’s 10.
“We were very balanced and Kris Larson had a great game at the post,” McGuire said. “The bench came out and gave us some big threes.”
The game went back and forth for the first half, Meadowdale with a slight advantage at 28-25 at halftime.
But Meadowdale outscored Kamiak 27-13 in the third quarter, due in large part to each Mavericks player contributing in some fashion. Meadowdale’s defense forced steals and fed off the turnovers.
“Everybody that played for Meadowdale got in the books,” West said. “Nothing really stood out, just a team effort by Meadowdale.
“I remember looking up at the scoreboard and it was 44-31 (in favor of Meadowdale),” West said. “That third quarter Meadowdale went on a huge run.”
Last night’s game was Kamiak’s home and conference opener, and West said that his team was prepared for a battle from the get-go.
“We came out amped up, and ready for conference play,” West said. “I dont think there was any added pressure, with it being the first home game and first conference game of the season for us.”
Kamiak was led in scoring by Sam Ruppel with 15 points, the only Knights player to score in double digits.
Meadowdale hosts Shorewood on Friday night and then plays Glacier Peak on Saturday. Kamiak will play Mountlake Terrace on Friday and Lynnwood on Saturday.
