OAK HARBOR — Sedro-Woolley outscored Oak Harbor by 10 points in the second quarter and ultimately won 53-41 in what was otherwise an extremely balanced boys basketball game Saturday at Oak Harbor High School.
“They just made a run and we couldn’t withstand it,” Oak Harbor assistant coach Justin Ronning said.
Oak Harbor head coach Mike Washington said that in the second quarter when Sedro-Woolley had a shot they made it whereas Oak Harbor was getting deeper in a rut with each miss.
“Once they miss a couple shots it was like something was over the rim,” Washington said.
Oak Harbor was able to rally in the third quarter and cut the deficit to four points but never got any closer. Oddly enough each team’s scoring was equal in both the first and third quarters.
“It’s a tough way to lose, the kids played hard,” Washington said.
Niko Redlich of Sedro-Woolley led all scorers with 20 points. Washington said he drove the lane especially well and was able to finish, often sinking off-balance shots.
“He was a beast tonight,” Washington said.
The Sedro-Woolley victory makes it the champion of the four-team Santa Slam Tournament. Oak Harbor advanced when Ferndale dropped out of the tournament and Sedro-Woolley defeated Coupeville in its first contest.
