Prep girls basketball: Man-to-man defense boosts Lake Stevens

LAKE STEVENS — Start out strong and good things can happen.

Lake Stevens jumped out to an eight-point lead after one quarter and kept its composure in an 11-point upset win against Arlington Friday night at Lake Stevens.

“We executed really well,” Lake Stevens head coach Randy Edens said. “The kids were really on top of what Arlington was trying to do.”

The Vikings employed a man-to-man defense in an attempt to limit Arlington’s Kyra Prause and Sheryl Scheppele.

“It’s been one of the few times we’ve played man this year,” Edens said. “It paid off for us in a big win tonight.”

Lake Stevens was led by 5-foot-8 sophomore Meghan Warbis’ 16 points and six rebounds. Edens added that junior Kayla Bostwick’s eight points and seven rebounds were key for the Vikings.

“(Kayla) did a lot of the dirty work tonight,” Edens said. “She probably had one of the more solid games of the season.”

The Vikings got help off the bench, too — 10 players scored for Lake Stevens.

“We had a lot of contributions … against a good team like Arlington, that’s a good confidence boost,” Edens said.
