Former Cascade High School soccer star Chris Henderson is one of three athletes who will be inducted this month into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame.

The hall of fame ceremony is April 15 at the Spirit of Washington Events Center in Renton. Athlete inductees are Henderson, a 1989 Cascade graduate and two-time Parade High School All-American, former Mariners first baseman John Olerud (Interlake 1986) and Lisa Raschkow Johnson (Auburn 1983), who played point guard for the University of Washington.

Five others will also be honored: Mike Burton (fine arts/official), Bill Harris (coach), Curt DeHaan (coach), Dick Eglet (official) and Alli Bennett (administrator).

Henderson had a stellar prep soccer career at Cascade, playing for teams that won four conference championships and seized state titles in 1987 and 1989. Later, he won a national championship at UCLA and received All-American honors. He went on to play 79 games for the US National Team and participated in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Henderson played 11 seasons in Major League Soccer and was a three-time MLS all-star. He is currently technical director for the Seattle Sounders.

Stanley providing power

Briar Stanley, the Monroe softball team’s catcher, is generating astounding hitting statistics. Through eight games, the senior had a .478 average (11-for-23) with six home runs, two doubles, a triple and 14 runs batted in. Monroe (1-3 Wesco North, 3-5 overall) plays at Snohomish (2-0, 4-1) at 4 p.m. today.

Reader poll: Top softball pitcher

Responding to the question “Who is the area’s best softball pitcher?” Herald readers picked Stanwood’s Brittany Jeans in an online poll. Jeans, a junior, received 57 votes, 18.3 percent of the 311 total votes. This spring, Jeans is 4-0 with 56 strikeouts in 28 innings. Jackson’s Dani Jackman was second in the poll, receiving 44 votes (14.1 percent).

Stickney picked to play in Washington/Oregon Shootout

Sean Stickney of Lake Stevens was selected to compete in the Washington/Oregon Shootout April 18 at the University of Portland. Joining Stickney, a senior center, on the Washington squad are Franklin teammates Freddy Wilson and Chris Holmes, Columbia River’s Steven Bjornstad, Shadle Park’s Anthony Brown, Puyallup’s Killian Larson, Federal Way’s Michael Hale, Eisenhower’s Taylor Elmo, Mountain View’s Joseph Vance and Bellevue’s Alex Schrempf.

Tennis surging at Lake Stevens

Three years ago, one freshman turned out for the Lake Stevens girls tennis team. But this spring fourth-year Vikings coach Jeff Leer welcomed a whopping 47 freshmen to the program. Altogether, the program has kept 91 of the 100-plus athletes that showed up for tryouts.

A combination of factors caused the spike in participation, said Leer, who previously coached a highly successful Sedro-Woolley program. “Part of the reason is we sold the program. The same kind of stuff I did (at Sedro-Woolley), we’re doing here,” Leer said.

That includes things like a popular team camp in early June, a no-cut policy and an emphasis on positive coaching.

“Tennis will sell itself, if it’s taught right,” said Leer. “It’s a fun game. It’s a game kids can play their entire life.”
