MONROE — There was no thunder and lightning — either from the sky or on the course — as the Monroe girls golf team defeated Lake Stevens and Stanwood Monday at At Echo Falls Golf Course.
Considering what Monroe has had to deal with so far this season — including witnessing the death of a classmate killed in a motorcycle accident — the win and consistent play was just the remedy for Monroe.
Last week, Monroe was leaving a practice at the driving range when the accident occurred.
“It has been a real tough season,” Monroe head coach Bob Simoni said. “I was joking with some of the team that if they didn’t do well that they would have to run laps. I just wanted to get their minds off it (the accident).
“Im glad the way we came out today, you never know what is around the corner.”
Monroe’s Amanda Reams didn’t compete last year, and was the co-medalist with Stanwood’s Alexa Dugan with 25 points. Simoni said that it is good to have Reams back. Reams along with Shelby Feske (22), Kelcee Johnston (20), and Lindzie Cooper (18) are hopefuls to qualify for state this season according to Simoni.
“No one did anything spectacular, but I am glad to see that everyone played well,” Simoni added about Monroe’s play on the soggy course. “Lake Stevens didnt play as good as usual. Monroe is just Steady Eddies, there were not any real spectacular shots. Pars were about the best we got.”
