EVERETT – The man who was stabbed to death Thursday in Everett has been identified as Derrick Craig Everson.
Everson, 21, was found about 2 a.m. in a wooded area near the 7800 block of Broadway. He had been stabbed more than 20 times, court papers said.
Everett police arrested David Mitchell Kopp, 19, of Everett, in connection with the slaying. Kopp appeared today in Everett District Court where a judge found probable cause to hold him for investigation of first-degree murder. Bail was set at $1 million.
Witnesses told police that Kopp, Everson and two other men had gathered to drink beer and smoke marijuana in a wooded area off Broadway Avenue known as Cardboard Hill. The men hung out for awhile and then decided to walk to one of the men’s nearby homes. A witness said he was walking down a trail, nearing Broadway, when he heard a scream from behind him.
He saw Kopp and another person run past him. The man told investigators he found Everson lying on the ground, bleeding from multiple wounds. He ran for help and called 911.
A witness told investigators that she received a phone call from Kopp, who admitted to stabbing Everson, police said. Kopp was arrested in north Everett and later spoke with detectives.
He allegedly told police that everyone was getting along but Everson was bothering him a bit. Kopp reportedly told police that as they were walking down the trail, he pulled out his butterfly knife. He told investigators he became paranoid that someone was following him. He allegedly said that he approached Everson from behind and began stabbing him without warning or provocation, police said.
Detectives reported that Kopp didn’t give them any reason for attacking Everson. He allegedly told police Everson didn’t do anything to him. He said that after the first stabbing he “just kept going at him,” according to a police affidavit.
He allegedly told investigators that after the stabbing, he walked for a short time and then called his mother to pick him up. Once home he allegedly threw the knife in a wooded area near the waterfront by Providence Everett Medical Center.
