The RED team has emerged as the powerhouse of camp, winning big twice today. Once again it was thanks to having six forwards capable of playing with the first unit, meaning the ones left on the second unit were dominating opponents’ second units. Paul Van de Velde and Dan Iwanski were the beneficiaries of that today as they put up big numbers. RED also has Thomas Heemskerk in goal.
Today was the opposite of yesterday, as the teams came out playing physical, but looked like they were starting to get tired by the end of the day. Yesterday the teams started slow before picking it up in the afternoon.
Among the veterans, in addition to Van de Velde and Iwanski I thought the GREEN forward duo of Cameron Abney and Markus McCrea did a good job of using their size to their advantage. I like the effort camp invitee Corey Tyrell is putting forth, and Heemskerk looks ready for the season. As a group, however, the vets could still step up the intensity.
For the rookies, 16-year-old center Manraj Hayer continues to look like someone who should be on the team this season as he’s been playing with the No. 1 units for more than a day and is right at home. Fellow 16-year-old forward Josh Winquist also looks like he’s ready to challenge for a roster spot. Defensemen Radko Gudas and Ryan Murray, who perhaps need to be called something other than newcomers, remain steady.
Camp continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. Be sure to tune in for live blogging.
