TALKING POINTS
A better game from Everett than the 4-2 victory over Tri-City on Friday, though it took the Tips a period to really get going. But after an evenly-played first period that ended 1-1 Everett took control. The Tips outshot the T-birds 39-22, including 28-11 over the final two periods.
Another solid effort from Kent Simpson in goal for the Tips tonight, and a pair of 16-year-olds — Ryan Murray and Josh Winquist — are making statements that they should crack a veteran-laden lineup.
Odd seeing John Becanic standing behind the visiting bench — the former Tips coach is now an assistant with Seattle. Looks like he’s handling defense again, which he did very well during his time in Everett. The T-birds also have a nice-looking 16-year-old prospect of their own in Colin Jacobs.
In the earlier games, Jacob Bergland had two goals and two assists as Portland beat Prince George 6-5 in a shootout (outshooting the Cougars 62-26), and Johnny Lazo scored his second goal of the game with less than a minute remaining to give Tri-City a 4-3 victory over Spokane.
TURNING POINT
Everett wasn’t making a lot happen until 18:28 of the first period, when a deflection off a defenseman presented a goal for Markus McCrea. The Tips gained control of the game from there.
HIT OF THE DAY
Midway through the second period Everett’s Colin Scherger timed his takeout on Justin LaChance to perfection, sending LaChance high into the boards.
THREE RISERS
(I’m changing this for the rest of preseason, listing Tips who helped their cause either for making the team or moving up in the pecking order)
First riser: Winquist. A goal and an assist, he doesn’t look like a 16-year-old out there.
Second riser: Paul Sohor. One assist, the defenseman is skating really well and appears more poised.
Third riser: McCrea. One goal, but more importantly played with intensity and used his big body to good effect.
Same high standards veteran honorable mention: Byron Froese. No points, but dug every puck out, won every faceoff and penalty killed like a madman.
