People

Jim Donald has been named president and chief executive of Haggen, Inc., a 33-store Pacific Northwest grocery company based in Bellingham. He most recently worked at Starbucks Corp. from 2002 to 2008, first as president of Starbucks North America and then as president and chief executive of Starbucks from 2005 to 2008. Donald was named one of the top 25 CEOs in the world in 2006 by The Best Practice Institute. He has more than 30 years of experience in the supermarket industry.

Michael Odle, a 1999 graduate of Meadowdale High School and the son of Bob and Judy Odle of Edmonds, has been named one of the country’s top “15 to Watch” by by PR News, a leading publication for communication and public relations professionals. Odle, 29, is regional public affairs chief for the Bureau of Reclamation and public affairs officer for the Oregon Air National Guard. He is the only federal government employee on the list.

Marysville Care Center in Marysville won the Facility of the Year Award for Life Care’s Northwest Division, and facility executive director Stephanie Bonanzino won a President’s Award for the division.

Shawn O’Donnell, owner of Shawn O’Donnell’s American Grill and Irish Pub, and Garth Williams, senior manager of the Business Services Group at the Snohomish PUD, have been appointed to the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Events

Diamond Knot Brewing Co., Snohomish County’s oldest operating brewery, is throwing a week-long party to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The brewery will tap vintage kegs at 6 p.m. on Oct. 11-15, culminated with a tasting of the last four years of its Ho!Ho! Winter Ale. The brewery is located at 621-A Front St., Mukilteo.

A free workshop on caring for your septic system will be from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 at the Stanwood PUD office, 9124 271st St NW. Teri King, who spearheads many water quality programs for the University of Washington SeaGrant program in Hood Canal, will help people learn about system types, how they operate, and how to protect them and possibly extend their life. The workshop is offered by Snohomish Conservation District with funding from the Department of Ecology Centennial Clean Water fund. Sno-Country Ford in Monroe and Sultan High School plan “Drive One 4 UR School,” in which people can test-drive new Fords such as the 2010 Taurus or Fusion Hybrid. For each test drive, Ford Motor Co. and Sno-Country Ford will donate $20 to Sultan High School. Each test drive will last about five minutes and is limited to licensed drivers 18 and older. The event is set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 17 at the high school, 13715 310th Ave. SE in Sultan.

Awards

The Snohomish County PUD has received three top communications awards from the Northwest Public Power Association for a conservation campaign, a safety education effort and a customer newsmagazine. The utility received first place honors for its Be a Conservation Sensation and Slips, Trips and Falls campaigns, both launched in 2008. NWPPA also gave a first place award to the PUD for its Current newsmagazine, which provides customers with information about how to save energy, green power sources, electrical safety and other topics.

Milestones

Rex and Susie Hensrude, with son Lloyd, mark their first anniversary of operating Ace Equipment Rentals at 702 Second St. in Snohomish. The store’s inventory is geared to homeowner and small contractor use. The store is open seven days a week.

Good deeds

Eaglesnest Secretarial Service Inc. in Marysville has sponsored three athletic teams for the Snohomish Boys &Girls Club; four seniors for Class of 2009 after graduation parties at Arlington and Marysville Pilchuck high schools; participated in a fundraiser to help children with muscular dystrophy attend camp; took part in the Take a Vet to Lunch program honoring active-duty and former servicemembers; and provided Thanksgiving baskets to two families.
