Everett Symphony performs music kids can relate to

It’s what busy parents in Snohomish County have been asking for: the chance to introduce their young children to classical music in a way that’s convenient, inspiring and fun.

That opportunity begins this weekend with the first in a series of mini symphony concerts presented by the Everett Symphony with help from two award-winning twin sisters and Mother Goose.

The series kicks off Saturday with “Mother Goose Goes to the Symphony.”

In this performance, the musicians take the complexities of Beethoven, Haydn, Schubert and Dvorak, and arrange the music so that it’s delightful for all ages. It’s an interactive show that encourages children to clap and sing while musicians perform on trumpet, trombone and tuba.

This concert is 35 minutes long.

The Everett Symphony is hosting sisters Lisa Grace Allison and Linda Sebenius, Redmond educators, composers and performers, and the creators of Let Your Music Shine, the well-known children’s music company, which also works with the Seattle Symphony.

With a long history in music education, artistic director Allison and music director Sebenius have created a company known for “the very best music for the very young.”

Allison is a voice and performance coach as well as an elementary music specialist for the Lake Washington School District. Sebenius, a composer and lead orchestrator and arranger for Let Your Music Shine, scores music for film. The sisters have performed their original musical theater scores for thousands of Northwest families, as well as releasing multiple award-winning CDs and DVDs.

Future mini concerts planned for Snohomish County by Let Your Music Shine include “Goldyhands and the Three Bows” in November, “Teddy Bear’s Musical Picnic” in January, “Musical Olympics for Tots” in February and “Cirque de Classic” in March.

Everett Symphony’s Chief Executive Roger Pawley called the series “great entertainment with an educational purpose.”

“Lisa and Linda teach about the instruments, and children learn about rhythm and pacing and all sorts of other musical concepts,” Pawley said. “Children are also introduced to important music that defines us as a culture.”
