50 YEARS AGO (1959)

James Slaughter, Daniel Barwick, Daniel Green and Cal L. Holmes, members of the Spiritualeers Singers of Paine Field Air Force Base, celebrated their third anniversary today. They sang at the service at Second Baptist Church, 2807 Virginia Ave.

Junior Homemakers 4-H Club met at the home of Paula Giddings to welcome new members and to elect officers. New officers were Margaret Niman, Gail Tiedman, Lynne Pederson, Bonnie McLawry, Jean Ness and Pam Solem. Record books were distributed and plans for the year’s projects were discussed.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

The family of John Neack, longtime Edmonds resident, invited his friends to help celebrate his 80th birthday at a coffee hour at 12:30 p.m. Sunday following the morning service at Christ Lutheran Church in Edmonds.

The nickname “The Alien” fit Alan Hjort well. Besides playing off the Marysville-Pilchuck cross-country star’s first name, it described how he ran. The captain of the team, he didn’t move his knees when he ran and, being taller than his teammates, it looked strange. They called it the Martian shuffle because it was out of this world.
