50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Flying in a C-124 Globemaster cargo plane, Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson of Everett dropped a Washington state flag to America’s South Pole Station yesterday. Jackson was on a three-week visit to Antarctica. He also included a note to the three Washington state men at the pole.
Congressman Jack Westland of Everett addressed the Everett Rotary Club yesterday at the Everett Elks Home. He discussed the national budget, the labor bill and the Atomic Energy Commission, and referred to President Dwight Eisenhower’s great success in his personal contact with the people in successfully achieving desired legislation.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Mike Gaffney of Everett emerged as a hero in the University of Washington’s football victory over Oregon. Gaffney scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown for unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Washington late in the third quarter.
Everett Parks and Recreation was offering a creative-movement and expressions class for the physically disabled who were 16 years and older. Alos, Everett Community College was sponsoring the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s child food program for preschool children from low-income families.
