PREP ROUNDUP: Free throws push Jackson girls basketball over Glacier Peak

Published 11:03 pm Monday, December 7, 2009

MILL CREEK — The Jackson girls basketball team jumped on Glacier Peak early and held on in the fourth quarter thanks to some solid free throw shooting to defeat the Grizzlies 67-58 in the two teams’ Wesco South opener.

“Glacier Peak has a very good team,” Jackson head coach Jeannie Thompson said. “This was a big win against a very good program. This will hopefully give us some momentum as we carry on through conference play.”

The Timberwolves (1-0 league, 2-0 overall) hit 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter and 23 of 31 in the game to fend off Glacier Peak.

“Free throws were a big thing for Jackson,” Thompson said. “We did a nice job of stepping up to the line and knocking down free throws.”

Thompson said that senior guard Erin Feeney, who finished with 17 points, made key free throws in the final quarter. “She put the ball on the floor and (took) it to the basket,” Thompson said.

Kristin Stoffel had 18 points and Leigh-Ann Haataja added 14 points to lead Jackson’s attack.

“(The scoring) was pretty spread out,” Thompson said.

The Jackson coach also praised the defense of Chanel Sam: “Sam had a really good game for us tonight. She had five or six steals and really created a lot of havoc. She helped establish defensive pressure tonight,” Thompson said.

Olivia VanDlac matched Feeney’s 17 points for Glacier Peak (0-1, 0-2) and Marjorie Heard added 10 more points for the Grizzlies.
