PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Cold-shooting dooms Lake Stevens vs. Stanwood

Published 9:59 am Monday, December 14, 2009

LAKE STEVENS — It may sound cliche, but in order to win basketball games, you have to put the ball in the hole.

Lake Stevens didn’t make shots on Friday and the old cliche held true once again, as Stanwood defeated the Vikings 45-39 in a Wesco North contest.

“We didn’t hit shots at all,” Stanwood coach Randy Edens said.

Edens said he could recall as many as 20 shots that the Vikings missed within 5 feet of the basket. The Vikings also shot 9-for-23 from the free-throw line.

“You have to give Stanwood credit for that, obviously they are doing enough to get us out of our rhythm, and … they got us,” Edens said.

Despite the Vikings poor shooting, they were able to come back and tie the game late, but a turnover that the Spartans turned into points sealed the Vikings fate.

“They were able to hold on down the stretch,” Edens said.

Edens believes that the Wesco North is going to be competitive all season and that the champion could have as many as five losses.

“It’s the way the North is going to be. There is no easy nights that’s for sure,” Edens said.

Sophomore Samantha Kelleigh led the Spartans, scoring 15 points and making three 3s. Brenda Bingham, also a sophomore added 13 points and two 3s for Stanwood.

Meghan Warbis led Lake Stevens’ balanced scoring attack with eight points.
