PREP WRESTLING ROUNDUP: University first in Lake Stevens Invitational

LAKE STEVENS — There doesn’t seem to be much debate over which are the top 4A high school wrestling teams in the state. The big question is: In what order will they finish at the state meet in February?

No. 1-ranked Lake Stevens (washingtonwrestlingreport.com poll), No. 2 Tahoma and No. 3 University have clashed twice recently and the order was different on each occasion.

Wednesday it was University’s turn to excel. The Spokane-area school finished first in the Lake Stevens Viking Invitational, eight points ahead of the host. Tahoma was 61/2 points further back in third place. At the Tri-State Tournament earlier in December, Lake Stevens was first followed by University and Tahoma.

“It was a tough two days,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said, “with some quality competition. It was good for us and I’m sure it was good for U High. It was a preview of February (at state).”

The team title hinged on two bouts both won by University wrestlers. At 152 pounds Ryan Zumwalt edged Lake Stevens’ Joshua Villani 4-3. At 160 University’s Jake Mason nipped Lake Stevens’ Jacob Anderson 3-2. Had Lake Stevens won both contests, it would have won the meet by eight points. A split would have resulted in a tie for the championship.

“Those matches were pivotal,” Barnes said. “They were one-point matches and they both went down to the wire.

“We were ahead with 15 seconds to go at 152 and gave up a takedown with 10 seconds.”
