Once a student of photography, Dick McMahon is now a teacher

Photographer Dick McMahon has spent a long time perfecting his photographic skills, producing remarkable results, winning numerous awards and sharing his skills with others.
His talent for recognizing photogenic subjects is all the more remarkable because he is mostly self-taught through years of studying books, taking seminars, learning from the work of other photographers — and shooting lots of film.
McMahon has taught photography for Kits Camera stores and served as an instructor for the Arboretum Foundation, the city of SeaTac, the Northshore Center, the Shoreline Center, the University of Washington Women’s Center and the Victory Heights 4-H.
“The Dick McMahon Exhibit” is on view through Jan. 31 at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace.
Seattle painter Virginia Howlett takes us to those universal places we all have in our collective memories as her delicate and beautiful images of sky, water and earth evoke in us a sense of connection.
Howlett’s landscapes are created with realistic and abstract qualities and are, in fact, inspired by real places she has been, such as British Columbia, the Sonoran desert of Arizona and her studio in Ballard.
Howlett’s paintings are on view starting today at Lynnwood Library Gallery, 19200 44th Ave. W., Lynnwood. The show runs through Feb. 11.
