Everett: Darst to lead public health division

Randy Darst has been selected to direct the Environmental Health Division at the Snohomish Health District. Darst previously served as manager and assistant director of the public health agency’s water and wastewater program. Darst follows Bob Pekich, the long-time director of environmental health, who retired in November.

Lake Stevens: Former astronaut to speak

Former astronaut Bonnie Dunbar is scheduled to speak Feb. 5 at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens and Granite Falls. The event is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Services Center, 12309 22nd St. NE. The event is free to the public, with a continental breakfast available for $5.

Dunbar, a native of Sunnyside and a University of Washington graduate, served on five space shuttle missions between 1985 and 1998. Dunbar has logged about 50 days in space, according to the Rotary Club. Dunbar also helped develop shuttle flight software and served the shuttle program in other capacities. She has worked in research in the private sector and currently serves as the president of the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Mill Creek: Senior center breakfast

The Mill Creek Senior Center will hold a breakfast to raise funds for their new center location from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday at the North Creek Retirement Community, 1907 201st St. SE, Bothell. The suggested donation is $15.

Monroe: Park board volunteer opening

The city’s park board is looking for another volunteer to join its ranks. Applicants to the board must live inside the city limits and should send a letter of interest to Mayor Robert Zimmerman, c/o Deputy City Clerk Eadye Martinson, 806 W. Main St., Monroe, WA 98272.

The park board meets on the third Thursday of the month. Its work includes reviewing the comprehensive park and recreation plan, assisting with new park sites and advising the City Council on park projects.

Terrace: Council OKs road work contract

A project to rebuild a 1/3-mile-long stretch of 230th Street SW between 56th and 61st avenues will begin in March and be completed in August. The city Council last week approved a $1.4 million contract with Tri-State Construction, Inc. of Bellevue.

Workers will add bicycle and parking lanes, sidewalks on both sides of the street, better drainage and a new main water line from 56th Avenue W. to the 228th Street SW bridge over I-5.

Funding came from federal stimulus and state Transportation Improvement Board sources.
