PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: McGrath’s return extends Cascade’s season

MILL CREEK — Chris McGrath is back and his team has a chance to go to state.
Out of action since suffering a severe ankle sprain against Arlington on Feb. 5, McGrath returned way ahead of schedule and made a gigantic impact. The senior guard scored 21 points (including five 3-pointers) to propel Cascade to victory in a loser-out 4A District 1 boys basketball tournament game at Jackson H.S. He scored 13 points in the pivotal third quarter, when Cascade outscored Shorewood 24-9.
“It felt so good. I came out here tonight wanting to give our team a spark,” McGrath said.
Forward Jordan Garrett tallied 12 points for Cascade, which plays Jackson (19-4) in a third-place, winner-to-state, loser-out game at 6 p.m. Friday at Marysville-Pilchuck High.
McGrath said Cascade team trainer Kirsten Harvey and numerous sessions of electromagnetic therapy at Edmonds Wellness helped him get healthy. McGrath’s doctor cleared him to play on Friday, Cascade coach Jamar Williams said.
The original diagnosis of McGrath’s left ankle injury was a four-week recovery. But he was out for just two weeks. McGrath rehabbed diligently, sometimes doing three sessions per day and still kept up with schoolwork.
“That’s how much he wants to be a part of this,” Williams said of McGrath, a four-year starter who had never played in a district tournament game until Wednesday.
“Nothing surprises me about that kid any more,” said Williams.
Senior Jerry Smallwood (11 points, two 3s) was the top scorer for Shorewood, coached by Marv Morris.
