YAKIMA — Chalk it up to youthful energy.
Led by a couple of stellar freshmen, the Glacier Peak girls track and field team finished tied for second with Eisenhower, behind West Valley (Yakima) in the Holder Relays at Eisenhower H.S.
Freshman Amy Eloise Neale finished the 1600 meter run in 5 minutes, 8.08 seconds and fellow first-year runner Katie Bianchini ran a 2:21.71 in the 800 meters, which was a freshman record and one of the top five times in the state according to Glacier Peak head coach Brannon Jackson.
The Grizzlies distance relay team of Stephenie Cummings, Brenna Condon, Sarah Whybark and Eloise Neale set a meet record with a time of 12:38.64. Cummings, who proved that the seniors could run with the youngsters, set a meet record in the 400 meters with a time of 57.63.
“We went in thinking we were going to be really competitive in the team competition,” Jackson said. “The girls really shined through.
“We’ve been spurned on by a lot of outstanding freshman. It’s a fun thing to see.”
Devon Keiser led the Glacier Peak boys, with a high jump that cleared six feet, eight inches.
“According to the guy on the PA system, it was the best jump in the state by eight inches,” Jackson said.
Jackson High School took the boys and girls combined trophy. They too were led by a rookie and a veteran. Mitchell Briggs, a senior, placed first in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:21.50 and freshman Brenden Casel won the 110 meter hurdles (17.60).
