PREP ROUNDUP: Hovey’s double key to 5-run Kamiak comeback

MUKILTEO — Welcome back, Eric Hovey.
Hovey, who returned to the Kamiak baseball lineup after nursing a torn calf muscle for the first eight games of the season, smacked a game-tying two-run double and Matt Stief added the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Kamiak a 6-5 Wesco South baseball win over Mountlake Terrace Tuesday night at Mountlake Terrance High School.
Andrew Groves, a 5-foot-10 senior right-hander for Kamiak (4-2 league, 6-2 overall), struck out seven and walked three while improving his record to 4-0.
“He had pretty good control,” Kamiak’s 17th-year head coach Steve Merkley said. “For Groves it was maybe off a little bit, but to be off a little bit and get a win is still good.”
Chris Guinn finished 3-for-4 with a double and RBI for Kamiak.
Starting pitcher Andrew Woeck took the loss for Mountlake Terrace (4-2, 5-3). Woeck struck out 12 and kept Kamiak off balance with his fastball and curveball, Merkley said.
