Blue Jays’ Snider placed on DL with wrist injury
TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have placed outfielder Travis Snider on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained wrist.
Snider took one swing off a batting tee prior to Monday’s game against Minnesota and concluded his right wrist still didn’t feel right. He will travel to Dunedin, Fla., on Tuesday for an MRI.
The move was retroactive to Saturday and third baseman Edwin Encarnacion was activated from the disabled list. He’s been out since mid-April with shoulder soreness.
Snider has not played since Friday when he hit a three-run homer in the Blue Jays’ 16-10 victory over the Texas Rangers. He said the injury occurred when his bottom hand slipped on a swing during the at-bat in which he homered.
Snider is batting .241 with six home runs and 15 RBI in 33 games.
Cabrera leaves with injury
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Cleveland Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera broke his left forearm diving for a groundball Monday night against Tampa Bay and is headed for the disabled list.
Indians manager Manny Acta said after a 4-3 loss in 11 innings that Cleveland will add a player to take Cabrera’s spot on the roster Tuesday.
Cabrera will be re-examined Wednesday and the possibility of surgery will be discussed.
Cabrera was hurt in the first inning when he dove for Hank Blalock’s grounder up the middle and third baseman Jhonny Peralta, who also was attempting to make a play, tumbled into him.
Sizemore not in lineup
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Cleveland Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore was out of the starting lineup for Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay, one day after he bruised his left knee. The Cascade High School alum has struggled offensively this year, hitting .211 with no homers and 13 RBI in 33 games.
Howell shuts down
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rays left-hander J.P. Howell has had a setback in his rehab program for a strained left shoulder. The reliever shut down a simulated game on Monday after 12 pitches due to discomfort in the shoulder.
Cameron still hampered by injury
NEW YORK — Red Sox manager Terry Francona says outfielder Mike Cameron isn’t quite ready to return to the team. Cameron is experiencing some tenderness in a different area of his injured abdomen, and Francona says he just wants to make sure he’s ready to go when he comes off the disabled list.
Cubs GM says Piniella is safe
CHICAGO — Despite the Chicago Cubs’ disappointing start, GM Jim Hendry says he’s “never given any thought” about replacing manager Lou Piniella.
“I’m absolutely, completely confident in Lou Piniella,” Hendry said before Monday night’s game against Colorado. “I have complete faith in the coaching staff, also. No intention of making any changes at all.”
Chicago reporters asked Hendry about Piniella’s job status because some national media have begun speculating that the manager could be in trouble if the Cubs don’t improve markedly.
D-backs acquire reliever
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks, with a bullpen by far the worst statistically in the majors, have released right-hander Bob Howry and acquired Saul Rivera. Howry, 36, still gets the $2.25 million he was due from the Diamondbacks this season. He had a 10.67 ERA, worst on the staff, and had allowed six home runs in 14 relief appearances. In Arizona’s 13-1 loss at Atlanta on Sunday, Howry gave up a home run to Troy Glaus on his first pitch and did not retire any of the five batters he faced.
Giants place DeRosa on DL
SAN DIEGO — The San Francisco Giants have placed veteran utilityman Mark DeRosa on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 9, with nerve inflammation in his left wrist.
Nationals call up Storen
ST. LOUIS — The Washington Nationals have called up right-handed reliever Drew Storen, the 10th pick of the 2009 amateur draft. The 22-year-old Storen saved four games and compiled a 1.11 ERA for Class AA Harrisburg and Class AAA Syracuse.
Padres put Hairston on DL
SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres have placed outfielder Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a strained left hamstring.
Lidge has cortisone shot
PHILADELPHIA — Phillies reliever Brad Lidge received a cortisone shot in his surgically repaired right elbow and is expected to begin a throwing program in the next several days. The closer began the year on the disabled list following offseason surgery on his pitching elbow.
Rollins returns to lineup
PHILADELPHIA — Jimmy Rollins is back in Philadelphia’s lineup after missing 29 games with a calf injury. The three-time All-Star shortstop and 2007 NL MVP was penciled into the No. 3 spot in the batting order for Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rollins wasn’t in his usual leadoff spot because Chase Utley, who normally bats third, was sent home with flulike symptoms.
