POULSBO — The Glacier Peak Grizzlies, in just their second year of existence, have advanced to the 3A boys soccer state quarterfinals.

Glacier Peak shut out North Kitsap 2-0 Tuesday in front of a partisan North Kitsap home crowd.

The Grizzlies dominated the game from the outset and were in complete control of the ball. They managed to be in the right place on defense, getting to balls that North Kitsap tried to clear, and frustrated the Vikings continually throughout the game.

“They were the better team tonight,” said North Kitsap coach Chris May. “They were just quicker to the ball. In the first half, we just couldn’t do anything right. They were a sound team.”

Glacier Peak (16-5-0) advanced to a quarterfinal game Saturday against the winner between Mount Si and Auburn Mountainview.

“For a group of kids that had no senior class (last year) and to come around and make the quaterfinals, that’s quite a turnaround,” said GP coach Shannon Murray.

He added, “We were very organized and disciplined tonight. Once we won the ball, we were consistent and did good things in transition.”

Glacier Peak scored the first goal in the 24th minute. After Brian Holguin had a free kick blocked by a wall of North defenders, the ball went to Jackson Miller. who made a crossing pass to Robin Hryciuk, who then put the ball in from 10 yards out.

Their second goal came in the 62nd minute on a goal by Jackson Miller off an assist by his brother Shane Miller, which caught North goalkeeper Jordan Hadden out of position.

Hadden made nine saves for North in goal, but was constantly attacked as North’s defenders had trouble clearing the ball out from their end. Andrew Weakley recorded the shutout in goal for Glacier Peak.

The loss was the first for North (14-2-2) in 29 home games. Their last home loss was in 2007 to Bellarmine Prep.
