Levin stars for Everett in 3A district softball tourney

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — No one could have scripted the phenomenal day for Everett’s Lexie Levin, and even an hour and 20-minute rain delay couldn’t hold back the sophomore.

Levin pitched back-to-back complete games, and jacked seventh-inning home runs in back-to-back games to lead Everett into the 3A District 1 tournament championship game against Sedro-Woolley 11 a.m. Saturday at Janick Fields in Sedro-Woolley. It is a rematch of last year’s 3A District 1 championship game, which Sedro-Woolley won 3-2 over Everett.

Levin gave up only an infield single in Everett’s first game, and put the game out of commission with a grand slam in the seventh inning with two outs to add to a 1-0 lead, with Everett eventually winning 5-0 over Mt. Vernon.

In the Seagulls’ semifinal game against Glacier Peak, freshman Kiki Harper hit her first career home run at the most opportune time. It broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh, and Levin came to the plate with a runner on and hit her second home run of the day, an opposite field two-run blast to put Everett up for good at 4-1. In her previous at-bat, GP chose to intentionally walk the potent Levin.

“No I have never seen anything like that,” Everett head coach Kyle Peacocke said of Levin’s impact in the games. “She is special, she is a gamer. She wants to hit the ball.

“That situation, tied 1-1, Kiki bats ninth and has never hit a home run … You are playing to get into a District Championship game and to have a freshman get up there and jack one out is pretty exciting.”

Levin filled the stats, pitching fourteen innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits, hit a double that eventually led to a 1-0 lead over Mt. Vernon, and two late-inning heroic home runs.

“I was excited, but I was kind of laughing, saying ‘this girl is unbelievable,” Peacocke said.

“It was one we definitely wanted, we knew Everett was a good team,” Glacier Peak head coach Brad Johnson said. “It was a little bit of a surprise when the ninth hitter got a home run off us. But now we just have to battle, we have to win.

GP will face Meadowdale in a loser-out game 5 p.m. Thursday at Janicki Fields.

In Glacier Peak’s first game, Miranda Granger showed up in a big way with a grand slam in the sixth inning for a 10-2 win over Shorecrest.

Sedro-Woolley defeated Lynnwood 4-0 in the semifinal game. Senior pitcher Bailey Brewer threw a one-hitter, striking out 17 Royals batters.
