Juneteenth marked

The Marysville School District will fly the Juneteenth flag on Friday, in honor of the end of slavery.

The flag commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Texas to spread the news that the Civil War was over and all slaves were free.

The day falls more than two years after Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. With the war’s end, troops could enforce that order.

The flag will fly at the Marysville School District Service Center, 4220 80th St. NE.
