PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Cascade uses a trick play to upend Mariner Marauders 20-14

Published 10:55 pm Saturday, September 18, 2010

EVERETT — The Cascade High School football team used a steady ground attack and a gadget play late in the game to score a 20-14 Wesco South victory over Mariner on Friday night at Goddard Stadium.

Cascade improved to 1-1 in league, 2-1 overall. Mariner fell to 0-2, 0-3.

Cascade showed Mariner many different looks offensively, ranging from the standard I-formation and split-backs to the popular wildcat formation, where a player other than the quarterback takes the direct snap.

Cascade faked a sweep with 4:16 remaining in the third quarter and handed off to Spencer Hancock, who hooked up with Jamieson McDaniels on a 34-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the decisive score.

“That was something that we had been working on, because when you have the depth we have, you can run plays like that,” Cascade head coach Jake Huizinga said. “They (the Marauders) are in a desperate streak, they have competed in every game and came out on the short end, so we just had to keep our nose down and play tough. That’s what we did.”

Running back Dominique Moore (six carries, 105 yards) scampered 61 yards, giving Cascade a 6-0 lead after the first quarter. The Bruins then settled into a coach’s dream drive.

Cascade put together a 19-play, 93-yard drive that ate up just over nine minutes and was capped with an 8-yard touchdown run by Anthony Hardy for a 13-0 lead with 5:28 remaining in the second quarter.

Mariner answered with a long drive of its own, wiping 5:07 off the clock, with running back Matt Rae scoring from 1 yard out. Rae finished with 147 yards on 25 carries and scored both of Mariner’s touchdowns. KeiVarae Russell added 18 carries for 101 yards for the Marauders.
