SULTAN — The bridge on the 15200 block of 311th Avenue SE in Sultan reopened Wednesday after catching fire Tuesday night.
Investigators believe a homeless person’s campfire underneath the bridge got out of control, said Merlin Halverson, fire chief for Snohomish County Fire District 5 in Sultan. The fire was beginning to engulf the bridge when firefighters arrived just after 6 p.m.
There may be a load limit on the bridge due to significant damage, Halverson said. The bridge is made of concrete and wood and dates to the 1970s.
More than 4,000 gallons of water were needed to extinguish the fire, he said.
The fire is under investigation by the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office. Repairing the damage is expected to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
