Prep notebook: Cascade to honor its all-time leading scorer

Tonight, Cascade High School will honor one of the best basketball players who ever donned a Bruins uniform.

Chris McGrath will be the center of attention during halftime of the Cascade versus Archbishop Murphy boys basketball game scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. at Reg Scodeller Gymnasium. McGrath, a 2010 Cascade High graduate, will be recognized “for his basketball success” and the school will “thank him for his contribution to the Cascade Bruins Basketball program and community,” according to a statement released by Cascade.

Currently a backup freshman guard on the Carroll College (Helena, Mont.) men’s basketball team, McGrath is Cascade’s career leading scorer with 1,246 points. The four-year varsity-team starter also set the Bruins’ single-game scoring record (49 points) and was an all-league first team selection three times.

First-year Archbishop Murphy coach Jamar Williams was McGrath’s coach at Cascade the last three seasons.

As a freshman at Carroll College, the 6-foot-2 McGrath has played in all 11 games this season for the NAIA Saints, who are 8-3. McGrath is averaging 2.7 points and 1.6 assists per game, and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 18:4.

Another former local player, Monroe High alum James MacIntyre, also plays for Carroll. MacIntyre, a 6-6 sophomore post, averages 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. Like McGrath, MacIntyre has played in all of Carroll’s games this season.

Football recruiting updates

King’s High senior Thomas Vincent received a full-ride football scholarship offer from the Air Force Academy on Wednesday, King’s coach Jim Shapiro said. It was the first athletic scholarship offer for Vincent, a quarterback/defensive back who had just returned from a recruiting visit to Air Force. Portland State University is also expressing interest in Vincent, Shapiro said.

Meanwhile, Jackson High kicker Daniel Sullivan got a full-ride football scholarship offer from the University of Wyoming on Wednesday. Two days earlier, University of Washington coach Steve Sarkisian spoke to Sullivan at Jackson High.

The regular NCAA National Letter of Intent signing period for Class of 2011 high school football players begins Feb. 2, 2011. Check out a list of local football players’ verbal commitments and other local athletes’ signings at http://bit.ly/g5d0EO.

Jackson wrestlers raised $6,000 for ailing Healy

Jackson High’s wrestling program raised $6,030 for Jackson student Kayla Healy, a senior who suffers from cystic fibrosis and needs money to pay for a potentially life-saving double-lung transplant. Most of the money was raised during the eight-team Scoop Invite wrestling tournament on Dec. 11. Healy and her family attended the event, and Healy handed out medals to weight-division champions after the finals, Jackson wrestling coach Gustavo Anaya said.
