Celebrate Carnegie Library’s 100th in Edmonds

The Edmonds Historical Museum will celebrate the centennial of the Edmonds Carnegie Library from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the museum, 118 Fifth Ave. N., Edmonds.

Mayor Mike Cooper will kick off the festivities, which will include cake, sparkling cider and a display highlighting the history of the brick and stone building erected in 1910 with help from a $5,000 Carnegie Foundation grant.

In the early days the building served as a Carnegie library on the upper floor, and was a City Hall and jail on the bottom floor.

In 1973, a group decided to establish a historical society and museum. The city of Edmonds donated the library and City Hall for use as a museum. The Edmonds-South Snohomish County Historical Society opened the museum that year.

Today, the museum features a permanent exhibit, “The Changing Face of Edmonds,” on the ground floor, plus rotating temporary exhibits upstairs.

In honor of the centennial, the museum hours, normally 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, will be extended to 8 p.m. in conjunction with the city’s Third Thursday Art Walk.
