SNOHOMISH — The Glacier Peak boys soccer team remained unbeaten with a 3-2 shootout victory over Shorewood Wednesday night.
The Grizzlies scored both of their goals in the first half, the first coming on a ninth-minute goal by left outside defender Kyle Bjornethun, who received a Michael Mikulsky pass that was part of a give-and-go between the two players. Bjornethun, a sophomore, has scored three goals this season, despite being on the back line.
“From that left back spot he adds an attacking presence that I don’t think a lot teams have. He’s a talented young kid and very experienced for his age,” said Glacier Peak head coach Shannon Murray.
Michael Mikulsky followed in the 16th minute on a counter-attack goal that was assisted by Gregor Troost. Troost drew the defender and then moved the ball off to Mikulsky, who had only to beat goalie Max Wright.
Shorewood (5-2 league, 6-3 overall) battled back in the second half, both of its goals coming in the 59th and 68th minutes against Glacier Peak goalie Andrew Weakly.
“Give them credit, they came out in the second half determined,” said Murray.
In the shootout, a coin flip gave Glacier Peak the first shot and it went on to score on five of five attempts. Shorewood missed its first chance.
Glacier Peak is now 7-0 in league and 9-0 overall.
