OAK HARBOR — Shorewood’s Kevin Moriarty carried a no hitter into the seventh inning of the Wesco 3A baseball game Friday night at Oak Harbor High School, leading the Thunderbirds to a 6-2 victory.

The home-team Wildcats had shared the top spot in the conference, but Shorewood took that over with the win.

Oak Harbor had just two base runners (one walk and one hit by pitch) before the Wildcats hit two singles and scored two runs off of Moriarty in the seventh.

“He pitched a great game. (He had) good command of both sides of the plate, a good change up, good curve ball,” said Shorewood head coach Wyatt Tonkin about his starting pitcher, who is now 3-0.

Senior first baseman Trevor Mitsui continued his incredible season at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance that included a double and an RBI. The two-time all-state player was hitting .722 entering the game with eight home runs.

“He’s just a great hitter. He hits with power to all areas of the field. He’s the greatest hitter I’ve ever seen,” said Tonkin. So great, in fact, that Tonkin had to move him out of the cleanup spot to avoid intentional walks. “I’ve had to put him in the lead-off spot to get him pitches.”

Christian Heideger hit 3-for-4 for Shorewood with two RBI. Teammate and designated hitter Duncan Hendrickson went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Shorewood plays Oak Harbor again on Tuesday.

“We gotta keep building on what we’re doing here, keep improving on our defense. We’ve got to keep getting good quality at bats,” said Tonkin.
