SNOHOMISH — Glacier Peak boys soccer head coach Shannon Murray said composure played the biggest role in his team’s 2-1 victory over Shorewood in a 3A District 1 winner-to-state semifinal game on Tuesday.

The Grizzlies fell behind when Eugene Hawley beat goalkeeper Andrew Weakley in the 20t

h minute to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead.

Glacier Peak bounced back when Gregor Troost scored on Shane Miller assist in the 34th minute to even things up before halftime.

“I think our playoff experience showed through very nicely,” Murray said.

In the second half, Shorewood was on the attack trying to get the go-ahead goal. But the Grizzlies were able to keep the score tied before finally breaking through.

“Shorewood got some good looks at goal in the second half,” Murray said.

The Grizzlies got the game-winner in the 72nd minute when Juan Machuca got his head on a Gregor Troost free kick and beat goalkeeper Simon Aspinall for the 2-1 advantage.

“We just kept plugging away doing what we set out to do and eventually things turned for us,” Murray said.

As is often the case with the Grizzlies, Troost had his hand in both goals.

“Gregor means a lot to us overall. A lot of what we do goes through Gregor,” Murray said. “He’s a big part of how we defend and attack, there is not doubt about it.”

After the game, Murray said it was a big victory for his team.

“It’s another step on our goal sheet,” Murray said. “I can’t be more proud of the group that’s for sure.”
