Snohomish students earn Kiwanis scholarships

The Tillicum Kiwanis Club of Snohomish has awarded $1,000 scholarships to students in the Snohomish School District.

The following students received scholarships to continue their education: Craig Hennessy, Madeline McGuire and Rebecca Pedersen of Snohomish High School; Amanda Fuller of AIM High School; and Matt Benzin, Kara Michaels and Aiko Szymczak of Glacier Peak High School.

Lynnwood student makes dean’s list at Ithaca

John Vogan of Lynnwood was added to the spring dean’s list at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y.

Vogan is studying in the Roy H. Park School of Communications. He graduated from Lynnwood High School last year.

Meadowdale graduate makes dean’s list at UW

Meadowdale High School graduate Hailey Helber was named to the University of Washington dean’s list for winter quarter. This was her sophomore year.

Winners announced in peace essay contest

Twelve middle school students in the Edmonds School District were recently named as winners in the Edmonds-based Snohomish County Peace Action’s 16th annual Linda Jewell Memorial Essay Contest.

First-place winners received award certificates and $50. Second-place winners received certificates and $25.

The first place winners are: Megan Kelly and Mikayla Monroe of College Place Middle School, and Abigail Shifron and Nathan Roberts of Madrona K-8 School.

The second place winners are: Ifeyinwa Acholonu and Jeannie Schroeder of College Place Middle School, and Pavi Chance, Grace Jeffress, Annabelle King, Alexis Martin-Entler, John Starkweather and Michael Wolf of Madrona K-8 School.

Essay topics included defining the word “peace,” exploring the role of the individual and government, and writing a letter to the editor about a problem in the community with possible solutions.

The essay contest was started in 1996 by Linda Jewell, a teaching assistant at College Place Middle School. When she died of cancer in 1999, her friends named the contest in her honor.

Local students on Portland dean’s list

The following Everett-area students made the dean’s list for spring semester at the University of Portland.

Erin Flotte, junior, secondary education; Tyler Hawkinson, freshman, mechanical engineering; Joseph Starzl, junior, philosophy; and Kate Stringer, freshman, secondary education.

Grace Academy celebrates graduates, valedictorians

Josiah Sleppy and Loveleen Kaler, both of Marysville, recently graduated from Grace Academy as valedictorians.

Sleppy, a National Merit Scholar, is planning to attend Cedarville College to study physics. During his years at Grace Academy, he was on the basketball team and served as president of the SLC and Honor Society.

Kaler is planning to attend Seattle Pacific University as a prelaw major. She was co-captain of the volleyball team, secretary of the Honor Society and volunteer at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.

A total of 12 seniors graduated from Grace Academy this year. The other graduates were: Barbara Moore, Rachelle DeFresne-McGowans, Julie Carlson, Shannon Newell, Autumn Huning, Caleb Larson, Wilson Butler, Demi Lin, Alexandra Prater and Hannah Krumm.
