Car lands upside down in creek, woman rescued

SPOKANE — Spokane officials say a car skidded off an icy road and landed upside down in a creek, leaving a 25-year-old woman caught by her seatbelt but still able to breathe in the partially submerged vehicle.

The Spokane County sheriff’s office said two deputies, firefighters and an ambulance crew rescued her Thursday morning after a passing motorist reported the accident.

Spokane Fire District 3 Deputy Chief Brian Anderson said the Cheney woman was hypothermic with minor injuries. He says she likely was in the water about half an hour.

The sheriff’s office said her seatbelt suspended her upside down with just her mouth out of the water.
