SNOHOMISH — With the weather significantly altering the schedule, Glacier Peak head coach Brad Johnson decided to field a new battery against Lake Stevens. In their first starts of the year, pitcher Kaylee Lawson and catcher Nina Kim each helped the Grizzlies to a 6-2 non-league victory.
Lawson struck out seven in the circle, yielding just one earned run and Kim delivered a RBI double in the second to stake Glacier Peak to an early 4-0 lead.
“Our new battery did really well,” Johnson said. “Lawson pitched consistantly through out the game.”
Grizzly stalwarts Callie Bircher and Annie Reynolds did their part as well. Bircher had run-scoring singles in the second and sixth and Reynolds hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth to answer a Lake Stevens run in the top of the frame.
Coming off a close loss to Lynnwood, Johnson thought the game against the Vikings was critical for Glacier Peak.
“We’re on an eight game streak (in 10 days) due to rainouts,” said Johnson. “It’s difficult for us, each game is very important and tonight was especially important.”
Bridget Kyle went 2-for-4 and scored both Vikings’ runs.
