50 years ago (1962)

Lt. Cmdr. Sterling E. Campbell congratulated his successor, Lt. Cmdr. Robert P. Brown, as commanding officer of Everett’s Naval Reserve Surface Division 13-11. Brown was a 19-year veteran of the Naval Reserve. Looking on was Cmdr. Eugene Mullkoff, commanding officer of the Everett Naval Reserve Training Center.

Jo Ann Pinney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Pinney of Everett, received her nurse’s cap, signifying her start in the hospital phase of her training at the University of Washington School of Nursing.

25 years ago (1987)

An 11-year-old boy was nabbed by the U.S. Coast Guard after the youth was observed racing his small boat through a sea lion pack. A radio station spotter flying overhead saw the youngster harassing sea lions and alerted authorities, said Coast Guard spokesman Lou Parris.

Woodway track coach Bob Plaisance was retiring this spring, ending 30 years of teaching — two years at Central Kitsap, four at Meridian, 12 at Mountlake Terrace and the last 12 at Woodway. Plaisance had been on the Bremerton High School football team in 1947 that won the state title.
