ARLINGTON — The Lake Stevens baseball team got on the scoreboard early and added a pair of runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 4-2 win against Arlington in a Wesco North game Tuesday afternoon at Arlington High School.

With the win, the Vikings — ranked No. 5 in the state by scoreczar.com — improved to 6-0 in league play and 11-0 overall.

“They really can swing it,” said Arlington head coach Scott Striegel. “And defensively they make pretty much every play. They make sure that nothing lands in the outfield.”

Dylan Lavelle hit a triple in the top of the first and scored soon after on a basehit by Anthony Blackie. In the third Lake Stevens struck again with a solo homer by senior Jake Nelson. The Vikings added a couple of runs — which they would need for the victory — on three singles in the fifth.

Nelson led Lake Stevens batting 2-for-4 with two RBI. Blackie was also 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Lake Stevens starter Kyle Cho impressed Striegel. Cho handled the Eagles until they got a bit of a rally going and were finally able to tally a run in the fifth.

“Cho kept us off balance,” Striegel said. “In the fifth we started stringing a few hits together.”

Ryan Walker (RBI groundout) and Aaron Spring (RBI basehit) drove runs in for Arlington — which left eight runners on base.

“We had guys on base the whole game,” Striegel said, “and if that ball drops in and they score it could’ve been different.”

Lake Stevens swept the recent three-game series with the Eagles, winning 5-2 last Wednesday and 14-0 on Friday. This game was much closer, which gave Striegel a little hope as his Eagles’ young season continues.

“I think we had a lot of confidence,” Striegel said. “The first game in the series we really played well. We’re gonna need the confidence in this (next) series with Monroe. We proved we could play with anybody.”
