Safety fair set for Saturday in Sultan

SULTAN — Sky Valley families are invited to spend Saturday learning all about safety.
“The name of our fair is Safety Fair, and that’s exactly what we focus on,” Police Chief Jeff Brand said.
The Sultan Safety Fair is planned from noon to 4 p.m. at First and Main streets.
There will be all kinds of informational activities and displays, Brand said.
The fair is free, but popcorn, hot dogs and other snacks will be for sale as community fundraisers.
One of the star attractions at the fair always is the “smokehouse,” where people learn how to escape a burning building, said Rocky Walker, a community volunteer and Block Watch captain.
Children also will be able to practice calling 911 and climb on police and fire vehicles, said Donna Murphy, Sultan’s volunteer coordinator.
Safety topics set to be covered include biking, the Internet, electricity, firearms and distracted driving.
The fair also is about emergency preparedness and bringing the community together, Mayor Carolyn Eslick said.
“It fits into our scope of life here in Sultan, and it has grown tremendously,” she said.
Participating agencies include local police, firefighters and schools, in addition to Community Transit, Snohomish County Public Utility District and the U.S. 2 Safety Coalition.
“There are just a whole bunch of partners,” Murphy said.
