Channel-surfing the vast cultural wasteland: Lifetime’s new reality series, “Chasing Nashville,” premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. It follows four teens from Appalachia pursuing their dreams of country stardom.

Finding stardom through a reality series? What happened to finding pop or country fame the old-fashioned way: by pummeling people with off-key warblings of stale standards on “American Idol”?

Remember to raise your hand: A Mill Creek pre-school teacher has embarked on a new career; her entertainment company runs trivia night competitions in county bars. The jobs are similar, with substitution of bar coupons for gold stars for the pop quizzes.

And contestants still have to be on good behavior or teacher will make everyone put their head down for a 15-minute quiet time.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1962, the Seattle World’s Fair closed. President Kennedy was scheduled to close the fair but was mired in the Cuban Missile Crisis and gave “head cold” as the excuse.

Because such excuses can only be used once, presidents now must choose from the following list for future crises: “government shutdown,” “tee time” or “Cuban Missile Crisis.”
