Young players score for Delta residents
The eighth-grade football team from Centennial Middle School in Snohomish played a special scrimmage game Oct. 22 for residents of Delta Rehabilitation Center.
The annual tradition is a highlight for the team as well as for the residents of Delta, also called the Snohomish Chalet. The long-term care facility houses people who have suffered severe brain injuries. About 50 residents came out bundled in wheelchairs to watch the runs, passes and tackles.
Coaches Tuck Gionet and Frank Lopez guided the Green-vs.-White scrimmage. But it was the fans in wheelchairs who got to make the play calls. T-shirts were passed out to the fans after each touchdown.
It was a “very powerful experience for the boys, the parents, teachers, and staff who were there,” parent Ken Hammond said.
Mill Creek school celebrates 25 years
Current and former teachers, staff and students gathered Oct. 10 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mill Creek Elementary School.
A group of former teachers and staff organized the event, which featured a short video presentation and several speakers, including Superintendent Gary Cohn, current school principal Brenda Fuglevand, and the school’s first principal, Lynnette Liffrig.
A highlight of the event was a display of items retrieved from a time capsule buried at the school during its first year.
Locals to lead state school board group
Chris Nation, Marysville School District director and current school board president, was elected the next vice president for the Washington State School Directors’ Association.
Nation was chosen in a run-off election with Marnie Maraldo of Issaquah.
The association’s current president-elect, Mari Taylor, of the Lake Stevens School District, was elected last year and will take over as president of the association.
They both will be sworn in Nov. 24.
Lake Stevens awards
The Lake Stevens School District recognized the following staff with its October 2013 Apple Awards: Beth Barnes, teacher, coach and ASB supervisor at North Lake Middle School; Brenda LaBranche, paraeducator at Mt. Pilchuck Elementary School; Mark McCoy, math teacher at Cavelero Mid High School; and Mike Weatherbie, principal at Lake Stevens Middle School.
