SPOKANE — Clinging to a 4-3 lead going into the seventh inning, Lake Stevens allowed four straight hits and Walla Walla scored two runs to walk off with a win over the Vikings in the first round of the 4A state tournament at Merkel Sports Complex.

The Vikings fell again in the consolation round, losing to Redmond 7-2.

Rayne Sylvester pitched a strong game in the opener, but faltered down the stretch to pick up the loss. Sylvester went 3-for-4 with a double and triple to lead Lake Stevens’ offense.

“She threw a great game,” said Lake Stevens coach Sarah Hirsch. “Walla Walla is a fundamentally sound ball club and they did a great job.”

Hirsch said she told her team after the two losses that she was happy with the season and is excited about the future.

“We had a great year,” Hirsch said. “We only lose three kids so the core of team is returning so that’s exciting. I told them I have no doubt that we’ll be back.”
