Letters awarded for Community Service

As the 2014-15 school year wrapped up, 66 students from the Darrington, Edmonds, Everett, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens, Lakewood, Marysville, Monroe and Snohomish school districts earned varsity letters in Community Service through a partnership between the districts and United Way of Snohomish County.

The 66 students spent a total of 12,964 hours volunteering with over 190 agencies and schools. The varsity letters awarded this year represent a 38 percent increase in awards from 2014, and a 94 percent increase from 2013, the first year the awards were offered in Snohomish County.

“We’re proud of these students and their commitment to volunteerism,” said Dennis Smith, president and CEO of United Way of Snohomish County.

To earn a Varsity Letter in Community Service, a student from a participating high school has to complete 145 hours of community service in 12 months, with at least 50 hours being in a non-school-related community volunteer activity.

Monroe teen is vet assistant Student of the Year for Sno-Isle

Monroe High School incoming senior Savannah Clendenen was selected by Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center as the 2014-15 veterinary assistant program Student of the Year.

“She really has a passion for large animals,” said Nichole Couffer, who runs the program.

Clendenen is one of the few students to be invited back to the veterinary assistant program for a second year. The second-year curriculum prepares students to become a licensed technician or in preparation for future study to be a veterinarian.

Couffer noted that it takes a special kind of person to go into the veterinary field. “Someone who simply loves animals is no good to me,” she said. “I need students who can put their feelings aside when they see broken and hurt animals and ask, ‘What can I do to help this animal?’”

Clendenen expects to graduate from Monroe High in spring 2016 and apply to Washington State University’s veterinary technician program.

Clendenen said she has learned more than she ever expected from the Sno-Isle program. “Not only vet assisting, but discipline, leadership and making new friends,” she said.
